Advancing Intellectual Property and Music Business Across Africa

CHINEDU ANGUS CHUKWUJI is Nigeria’s foremost intellectual property and leadership expert. His expertise in IP, collective management, licensing, and music tech, along with his deep understanding of creative entrepreneurship, is unparalleled. With a rich history of over 25 yearsin the IP sector in Nigeria and across Africa, he brings extensive experience that not only adds credibility to his expertise but also instils confidence in his clients and collaborators. Dr. Chukwuji's track record is marked by several successful IP licensing agreements he has adeptly negotiated and executed. His clients, representing various industries, including broadcast, hospitality, telecommunications, FMCG, advertising, CMOs, and the multinational sector, are a testament to his negotiation skills. He has also effectively handled several key online and digital contracts locally and internationally.

Chukwuji's transformative work and continued efforts across Africa in IP licensing, distribution, music business, collective management, and IP enforcement have been genuinely inspiring. His dedication and innovation in intellectual property, alongside other genuine stakeholders, have significantly reshaped Nigeria's music IP landscape, opening up new avenues for right owners across different generations to earn income from their creative and innovative works. His work is a testament to the power of dedication and innovation in intellectual property. Dr. Chukwuji's academic journey is a testament to his unwavering commitment to excellence. His diverse educational background, including a degree in Project Management, a Master's in Business Administration, a Master's in Intellectual Property, and a PhD in Executive Leadership, equips him with a unique perspective and a comprehensive understanding of the field. This academic prowess instils confidence in his clients and collaborators, assuring them of his deep knowledge and expertise. His attendance at several IP workshops, training, seminars, and conferences at home and abroad, including a two-year intensive mentoring programme on licensing and tariff structure for new media (licensing in the digital environment) under the auspices of the Norwegian Copyright Development Association (NORCODE), further enhances his expertise.

Dr. Chukwuji's influence in the intellectual property field extends to his role as an intellectual property facilitator for programmes organised by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), the United Nations Specialised Agency for Intellectual Property, and the Norwegian Copyright Development Association (NORCODE). His contributions to these programmes further demonstrate his expertise and influence in the field. As a former Chief Executive Officer of the Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON), Dr. Chukwuji was responsible for ensuring that the creative works of the company's members, affiliates, and assignors worldwide were protected and rewarded whenever exploited. Dr. Chukwuji continues championing respect for copyright and related rights locally and internationally and continues to provide consultancy services for CMOs across Africa. Dr. Chukwuji co-founded two local music tech companies that provide DIY distribution, streaming, and podcasting services to artistes and rightsholders. He founded PurpleBlue Entertainment Solutions, a rights management company that provides services for content owners and users, and serves as its Chief Executive. He also consults for organisations across Africa on intellectual property management, good governance, and leadership. He is the National Coordinator of the Record Label Proprietors Initiative (ReLPI), the voice of recording companies in Nigeria and an affiliate of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI). He is esteemed and widely recognised as an international expert. Dr. Chukwuji plays a crucial role in the Nigerian music industry by organising creators and musicians around issues related to their rights and the protection of their works. He is part of a team from the creative sector that contributed to the recently approved Nigerian Copyright Act, which advocates for the proper protection and compensation of creators, musicians, and rightsholders. Additionally, he served on the committee that reviewed the Nigerian Cultural Policy and was recently appointed by the Honourable Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism & Creative Economy to the following committees: Committee for the International Conference on Financing and Incentivising the Art, Culture and Creative Economy; Committee for the Development of the National Policy on Financing and Incentivising the Art, Culture and Creative Economy and Creative Economy Policy Drafting Committee. Dr. Chukwuji's dedication to imparting knowledge and mentoring young professionals is a cornerstone of his initiatives. He is the driving force behind the highly regarded PurpleBlue Copyright and Music Business Masterclass Series. As the founder of the PurpleBlue Academy of Music Business (PAMB), he is actively shaping the future of the intellectual property industry and inspiring the next generation of practitioners. His commitment to mentoring and knowledge sharing is a testament to his passion for the field and his desire to see it thrive.
